Google on Friday announced it will begin testing prototypes of its fully autonomous self-driving cars on public roads. The vehicles won't roam too far from their Mountain View, California, home -- but this latest phase of testing could be critical both for cultivating positive consumer perceptions, and influencing future legislation affecting the nascent sector.

Google has "a few" driverless car prototypes that will be testing this summer, said Chris Urmson, director of the Google Self-Driving Car Project. The prototypes are based on the familiar Smart Fortwo-like bubble designs that have become almost synonymous with self-driving cars.

The United States and its leading Western allies, known as the "Five Eyes," planned to hack into smartphones through their links to Google and Samsung's app stores, CBC News and The Intercept reported.

They wanted to infect apps with spyware and find ways to send misinformation to targets, according to documents released to the media by National Security Agency whistle-blower Edward Snowden.

The intelligence agencies also apparently began targeting the mobile browser UC Browser in late 2011, after discovering it leaked revealing details about its users.

UC Browser runs on Android, iOS, Windows Phone, BlackBerry, Java ME and Symbian.

Owned by Chinese e-commerce giantALIBABA, UC Browser is the world's leading third-party mobile browser, accounting for nearly 13 percent of the market in March, according to Sitepoint.

It's widely used in China and India, and is gaining ground strongly in emerging regions. It had 500 million users as of March 2014.

Facebook teamed up with UC Browser earlier this year to allow Facebook notifications in the app.

Lionel Messi has confirmed he is to be a father again after posting a picture of his pregnant wife on social media.

Messi took to Instagram to post a picture of his son, Thiago, kissing his wife Antonella Roccuzzo’s stomach with the message: ‘Waiting for you baby. We love you.’

They have used a method called,'Heuristic Discovery of Location Access' which will calculate changes in the value of 'getLastKnownLocation' variable by any GPS enabled app to detect them.

"As it turns out, there is no obvious way for a normal Android app to monitor whether other apps are accessing location. However, we discovered we could exploit the method getLastKnownLocation available in the Android Location API for this purpose as an effective side channel."

But at this point, it is not clear that how much this app is accuratly able to catch the 'Location accessing' apps and the method they have mentioned could be limited to the foreground applications (the apps with a user is interacting at that time) only, rather than detecting apps while accessing your location silently in the background.

According to a study, 74% of Smartphone users use a location based service like Facebook, Whataspp, Snapchat etc. Such Security applications with detection features are the demand of time so that users can keep an eye on each and every event to protect their privacy. The app should be available on Google Play within the next two months.

In that particular tweet, Roberts joked: "Find me on a 737/800, lets see Box-IFE-ICE-SATCOM, ? Shall we start playing with EICAS messages? 'PASS OXYGEN ON' Anyone? :)"

The federal agents addressed the tweet immediately and took it seriously following the Roberts’ capabilities of such hacking tactics.

A Belgian watchdog has urged all Internet users to download privacy software specifically to shield themselves from Facebook's grasp.

The social network has been under fire for the ways in which it tracks user and non-user behaviour online, without consent, most recently becoming the target of a Europe-wide lawsuit headed up by activist Max Schrems.

It was revealed in April that 25,000 people had already signed up to be a part of that lawsuit, which argues Facebook has been breaching EU data protection law. Individual regulators have been investigating whether or not this is the case for years, and in April Facebook confessed to tracking non-users using cookies (something for which consent must be sought if related to advertising, according to EU law). The social network blamed it on a bug.

That admission only came about when the same watchdog, the Belgian Privacy Commission (BPC), revealed it in an earlier report, the findings of which its current recommendations have been based upon. The report also found that Facebook tracked anyone that uses the "Like" button via social plugins, available on an estimated 13 million sites, and the site tracks users that have logged out of the social network.

The authority has recommended that Facebook alter the way the plugins work, that websites put in extra protections for their visitors when plugins are present, and that the general public use privacy software that will circumvent the problem completely. The latter recommendation suggests the BPC has little trust in Facebook changing its operations any time soon.

For its part, Facebook has always maintained that it abides by EU data protection law. It does, however, defer to the Irish data protection commissioner rather than Europe's, like many other US tech giants based in Ireland.

The pressure mounting on the likes of Google and Facebook to explain their tracking operations in recent years has been growing a source of tension between US and Europe, with President Obama publicly attacking the latter earlier this year for using data protection as an excuse for furthering commercial interests. He told Re/Code: "We have owned the Internet. Our companies have created it, expanded it, perfected it in ways that they can’t compete. And often times what is portrayed as high-minded positions on issues sometimes is just designed to carve out some of their commercial interests."

Undeterred, the European Union—spurred on by recommendations made by former EU Commissioner Viviane Reding—decided on creating a European-wide data protection body earlier this year. It would be designed to put an end to citizens of individual member states having to file data protection complaints in the country where a company is based. Instead, members have the option of filing in their own country. That is what Schrems has done, filing the European-wide lawsuit targeting Facebook in his home city of Vienna. The move, if it goes ahead, is set to have a huge impact on US tech giants based in Ireland.

SAN MATEO, Calif.—Now in its tenth year, Maker Faire has grown to a huge, weekend-long event. While there are projects and companies of all shapes and sizes, MegaBots' demo of its giant fighting robot was clearly the highlight. The organizers had it fire huge paintballs at a car to demonstrate its capabilities. They added that within a few years, they would like to organize full-scale battles between these MechWarrior-style machines in real stadiums, complete with human pilots and spectators. (See some of them in action below.)

There were a few other neat examples of robots and related startups on display this weekend, and the gallery above contains some highlights like an old Apple IIe and Raspberry Pi game consoles. If interested and near the Bay Area, the event continues today.
